Formation of the Earth: Label and characterize layers of the internal Earth. Explain how density affects layering of the Earth. |
(long block) Students are given a brief overview of how the solar system formed. Discrepant events demonstrate mass and pressure. Partnered discussions applying the concept to real-life scenarios, and to the Earth's internal composition. |

Layers of the Earth: Label and characterize layers of the internal Earth. Explain how density affects layering of the Earth. |
Demo of a density column. Students are given a diagram of the layers of the Earth, a list of element densities, and the compositions of materials that clumped together during Earth's formation, and asked to predict the composition of the Earth's layers. Students watch videos on the four major Earth layers and how scientists indirectly measured them. |

Magnetosphere: Describe magnetism on and around the Earth, and how it affects the Earth. |
Notes on the magnetosphere and aurorae. Watch a video on magnetism and the magnetosphere. |

Magnetosphere: Describe magnetism on and around the Earth, and how it affects the Earth. |
Conclude magnetism video. As a ticket to leave, students have their choice of drawing a color diagram of the Earth's layers and magnetosphere, or of writing a page explanation of why we have the layers that we do and why we are protected from space particles and solar wind. |
